The Year 2010
On January 19, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) held a working conference on strengthening the construction of Marxist theoretical disciplines and theoretical research. The meeting was chaired by Vice President Wu Yin. Vice President Li Shenming delivered a speech and laid out the deployment for strengthening Marxist theoretical disciplines and theoretical research within CASS. Li Hanlin, Deputy Director of the Office of the Academy's Marxism Project [1] and Director of the Bureau of Scientific Research Management, provided an explanation of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences 2010 Work Plan for Strengthening Marxist Theoretical Disciplines and Theoretical Research. More than 100 people attended the meeting, including members of the CASS Leading Group for Marxist Theoretical Discipline Construction and Theoretical Research, division-level leaders and heads of research offices, heads of Marxist theory research offices (departments), and heads of research groups for the "Excerpts of Topical Research" and "Topical Research Projects on Marxist Theory." The meeting was hosted by the Office of the Academy's Marxism Project (housed within the Institute of Marxism Studies).
In January 2010, the Bureau of Scientific Research Management approved the roster for the Second Academic Committee of the Institute of Marxism Studies (IMS): Cheng Enfu, He Bingmeng, Li Chongfu, Hou Huiqin, Xia Chuntao, Luo Wendong, Zhang Zuying, Hu Leming, Feng Yanli, Zhao Zhikui, and Liu Shuchun. (Mid-term adjustments: Fan Jianxin was added in October 2011, and Deng Chundong was added in September 2012).
On February 9, the transfer ceremony for the China Association of Atheism and the journal Science and Atheism—organized by the Bureau of Scientific Research Management—from the Institute of World Religions to the IMS was held at the CASS Academic Lecture Hall. CASS Vice President Wu Yin, Director of the Bureau of Scientific Research Management Li Hanlin, Secretary of the IMS Party Committee Hou Huiqin, and Director of the Institute of World Religions Zhuo Xinping, among other relevant officials, attended the ceremony. Wang Zheng, Deputy Director of the Bureau of Scientific Research Management, presided over the meeting.
On March 11, the Office of the Academy's Marxism Project held a research launch and exchange meeting for the "Excerpts of Works by Classical Marxist Authors on Special Topics." Li Shenming—Vice Leader of the CASS Leading Group for the Marxism Project and Vice President of CASS—delivered a speech titled "Be Comprehensive, Accurate, Scientific, and Rigorous: Doing a Good Job in the Excerpting of Classical Marxist Authors by Topic." Hou Huiqin, Deputy Director of the Academy's Marxism Project Office and Secretary of the IMS Party Committee, chaired the meeting. Zhai Minggang, Deputy Director of the Department of Marxist-Leninist Works of the Central Compilation and Translation Bureau [2], introduced work experiences and precautions for excerpting classical Marxist authors. Cui Jianmin, Party Secretary of the Institute of West Asian and African Studies; Wang Xiuqiui, Party Secretary of the Institute of World Economics and Politics; Fan Xinyu, Senior Editor; and Zheng Bingwen, Director of the Institute of Latin American Studies, introduced their respective institutes' experiences in thematic excerpting. More than 50 heads and member representatives of thematic excerpting groups from various CASS units attended the meeting.
On March 26, following approval, the "CASS Center for Comparative Research on Social Development" was renamed the "CASS Research Center for Marxist Economic and Social Development."
From April 10 to 12, the Fourth National Forum for Deans of Marxist Academies was held in Guiyang. Hosted by the CASS Department of Marxist Studies and the IMS, and organized by the Guizhou University of Finance and Economics, deans and presidents from over 50 universities nationwide conducted discussions around the theme "The 75th Anniversary of the Zunyi Conference [3] and the Sinicization of Marxism." Chen Yiqin, Member of the Standing Committee of the Guizhou Provincial Party Committee and Director of the Provincial Propaganda Department, sent a congratulatory letter; Kong Lingzhong, Vice Chairman of the Guizhou Provincial CPPCC and Director of the Provincial Department of Education, attended the opening ceremony. Cheng Enfu chaired the meeting and delivered a keynote report at the opening. Jin Minqing, Deputy Director of the IMS Department of Sinicized Marxism, gave the closing remarks. Zhong Jun, Director of the Research Office for Economic and Social Construction of the Department of Marxist Development, and other comrades from the IMS attended the meeting.
In April, the IMS was awarded the title of "Civilized Unit of Central State Organs" [4] for the year 2009. By this point, the IMS had received this title for three consecutive years (2007, 2008, 2009) and was eligible to apply for the "Exemplary Unit" status in 2010.
On September 26, the Fifth CASS Staff Games concluded. The IMS not only achieved the second-highest overall team score but also won the "Spiritual Civilization Award" for its unified, enterprising, harmonious, and orderly presence.
On the afternoon of September 28, CASS Vice President Wu Yin led a joint disciplinary research team—composed of the Bureau of Scientific Research Management, the Bureau of Personnel and Education, and the Bureau of International Cooperation—to the IMS for an inspection. The team sought to understand the IMS's disciplinary construction, layout, and innovation plans to prepare for the overall adjustment of CASS disciplinary layouts. Cheng Enfu delivered the work report, while Hou Huiqin and the heads of various research departments and offices gave individual presentations. Vice President Wu Yin noted in her concluding remarks that CASS has always placed high hopes on our Marxist research.
On the afternoon of October 22, the IMS Labor Union election was held, establishing the First IMS Labor Union Committee and the First Labor Union Financial Audit Committee. Party Secretary Hou Huiqin presided.
On November 25, Wang Weiguang, Deputy Secretary of the CASS Party Leadership Group and Executive Vice President, chaired the 24th President’s Executive Meeting of the year. The meeting reviewed a request from the Department of Marxist Studies for funding for the journal International Critical Thought. IMS Director Cheng Enfu and Deputy Director of the Bureau of International Cooperation Wang Lei gave reports. The meeting held that establishing the foreign-language academic journal International Critical Thought would help promote the "going out" [5] of the theoretical achievements of Sinicized Marxism and strengthen exchanges between Marxist researchers and left-wing scholars internationally. The meeting approved the creation of the journal, provided funding under the "Plan to Support Academy Foreign Language Publications," and decided that Comrade Cheng Enfu would serve as the primary person in charge, responsible for the final review of manuscripts.
On December 24, the 5th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies was held at the Social Sciences Auditorium. Invited guests included Chen Kuiyuan, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and President of CASS; Leng Rong, Director of the Central Literature Research Office; Ouyang Song, Director of the Central Party History Research Office; Li Jingtian, Executive Vice President of the Central Party School; and current CASS leadership. Executive Vice President Wang Weiguang delivered a speech. Cheng Enfu reported on the development and achievements of the IMS over the past five years. Hou Huiqin chaired the assembly.
On the afternoon of December 24, an academic seminar titled "Advancing the Sinicization, Modernization, and Popularization of Marxism [6], Seizing the Initiative in Socialist Ideology, and the Launch Ceremony of the Yearbook of Marxist Theoretical Research and Discipline Construction (Thinker Forum 8)" was held in the CASS Academic Lecture Hall. About 30 IMS consultants and specially invited researchers—including Zheng Keyang, Hou Shudong, Lu Zhichao, Li Jingwen, Wei Xinghua, and Tian Xinming—along with more than 100 scholars, attended the meeting. Hou Huiqin chaired the meeting, and Cheng Enfu delivered the keynote report.
