The Year 2022

On the morning of May 11, Shi Taifeng, President and Secretary of the Party Leading Group ^[1] of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), conducted a research visit to the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. He was accompanied by Gao Xiang, Vice President and Deputy Secretary of the Party Leading Group. President Shi Taifeng fully affirmed the achievements made by the Center since its establishment. He issued explicit requirements for further deepening the research, dissemination, and interpretation of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, providing direction for promoting the High-quality Development of the Center. On the afternoon of May 11, the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, together with the Department of Research on Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era under the Institute of Marxism Studies, held a symposium to study and comprehend the essence of President Shi Taifeng’s speech.

On July 13, the academic seminar on "The 'Two Establishments' and the Adherence to and Development of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era" and the release of the Yellow Book on World Socialism (2021-2022) were held in Beijing. The event was jointly hosted by the CASS World Socialism Research Center, the Institute of Marxism Studies, and the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, with the cooperation of Contemporary China Publishing House. Gao Xiang—Vice President and Deputy Secretary of the Party Leading Group of CASS, and President and Secretary of the Party Committee of the Chinese Academy of History—attended and delivered an address. Zhen Zhanmin, Vice President and Member of the Party Leading Group of CASS, attended the meeting. Li Shenming, former Vice President of CASS and Director of the World Socialism Research Center, delivered the keynote report. Other speakers included Li Yi, Vice President of the Central Party School (National Academy of Governance); Chen Li, former Director of the Academic and Editorial Committee of the Institute of Party History and Literature of the CPC Central Committee and Vice President of the China Association for CPC Literature Research; General Zhao Keming, former Political Commissar of the National Defense University; and Kong Dan, Chairman of the CITIC Foundation for Reform and Development Studies and former Chairman of CITIC Group. Xi Xiangyang, Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice Dean of the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies, presided over the assembly.

On July 14, Zhen Zhanmin, Vice President and Member of the Party Leading Group of CASS, conducted a research visit to the Institute of Marxism Studies. Xi Xiangyang, Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice Dean of the Institute, presided over the meeting and reported on the Institute’s work. Gong Yun and Lin Jianhua, Vice Deans of the Institute, along with Research Department Directors Yu Bin, Liu Zhiming, Chen Zhigang, Pan Jine, and Yu Haiqing, attended the report session.

On July 24, the international seminar "The New Era: International Seminar on Marxist Theoretical Innovation in China, Italy, and Switzerland" was held in Beijing. It was jointly hosted by the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies, the Italian Association of Marxists "21st Century" (Associazione Nazionale Politico-Culturale Marxista "XXI Aprile"), and the Swiss magazine New Politics (La Nouvelle Politique). This seminar is part of the "International Seminar on Marxist Theoretical Innovation" series organized by the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies.

On September 12, the "9th International Forum on Socialism" was held through a combination of online and offline formats. The forum was jointly organized by CASS, the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), and the Lao Academy of Social and Economic Sciences (LASES), and was coordinated by the International Cooperation Bureau of VASS and the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies. The theme was "Socialist Development Models under New Era Conditions: Theory and Practice." Separate venues were established in Hanoi, Vietnam, and Beijing, China, with the Lao delegation attending the Hanoi session in person. Nearly 100 experts and scholars from China, Vietnam, and Laos conducted in-depth discussions on topics such as "Theoretical Issues of Socialist Development Models," "Practical Issues of Socialist Development Models," and "International Perspectives on Socialist Development Models." At the opening ceremony, Zhen Zhanmin, Vice President and Member of the Party Leading Group of CASS; Dang Xuan Thanh, Vice President of VASS; and Khanlasy Keobounphanh, Vice President of LASES, delivered addresses.

On November 3, the launch ceremony for the CASS Library Database of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era was held in Beijing. The ceremony was organized by the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the CASS Library.

On November 26, the first "Forum of the National Academy of Social Sciences System on Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era" was held in Changsha. The theme was "Opening New Realms in the Sinicization and Modernization of Marxism." Zhen Zhanmin, Vice President and Member of the Party Leading Group of CASS, and Qing Lixin, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee (handling daily operations) and Director of the Provincial Press and Publication Bureau (concurrently), attended and delivered addresses. The opening ceremony was presided over by Zhong Jun, Secretary of the Party Leading Group and President of the Hunan Academy of Social Sciences (Development Research Center of the People’s Government of Hunan Province). Ren Xiaoshan, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee and Director of the Provincial Film Bureau (concurrently), attended the meeting. The forum was hosted by the CASS Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the Publicity Department of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee, and organized by the Hunan Academy of Social Sciences. Over 100 experts and scholars from the social sciences academy system and various universities attended.

On December 3, the "14th National Forum for Deans of Marxist Academies" was held online. Organized by the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies and Jilin University, the forum was hosted by the School of Marxism at the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the School of Marxism at Jilin University, with editorial assistance from the journals Marxist Studies ^[2] and World Socialism Studies. The theme was "Studying and Implementing the Spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress and Opening New Realms in the Sinicization and Modernization of Marxism." Opening addresses were delivered by Han Xiping, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Jilin University; Xi Xiangyang, Party Secretary of the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies; Liu Lixin, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of the Jilin Provincial Party Committee; Zhang Hongbin, Deputy Secretary of the Education Working Committee of the Jilin Provincial Party Committee and Director of the Department of Education; and Wang Ying, President of the Jilin Provincial Academy of Social Sciences. Wu Hongzheng, Dean of the School of Marxism at Jilin University, presided over the opening. Over 80 experts and deans from the field of Marxist theory from institutions such as CASS, the Central Party School (National Academy of Governance), Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Jilin University participated. They conducted in-depth discussions on topics including "The Essential Characteristics of Chinese-path Modernization and Its Contemporary Advancement," "The World-Historical Significance of Chinese-path Modernization and Historic Achievements in the New Era," "Worldview and Methodology and the New Realm of the Sinicization and Modernization of Marxism," and "National Rejuvenation and the Communist Party of China in the New Era."
