Activities of the Leadership of the Institute of Marxism Studies and Members of the Marxism Department during the Third Quarter
☆ Deng Chundun On the morning of July 24, attended a meeting of the Party Building Research Institute of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee. On the morning of July 25, attended a meeting of the Chinese National Academy of Arts (文化部艺术研究院) [1] under the Ministry of Culture. On the afternoon of July 31, accompanied Wei Jianlin, former Deputy Director of the Central Policy Research Office, to meet with the Chairperson of the Communist Party USA. On August 2, traveled to Chongqing to deliver a lecture on the educational practice activities of the Party's mass line [2]. On the afternoon of August 7, participated in a symposium with a delegation from the Propaganda Department of the CPC Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Committee, who visited the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) to inspect the status of the Marxism Theory Research and Construction Project (马工程) [3]. On August 15, traveled to Jilin University to attend and deliver a speech at the Fourth "Forum on the Sinicization of Marxism" and the "Mao Zedong and the Sinicization of Marxism" academic seminar. On September 3, lectured at the Chinese People's Armed Police Forces Academy on issues regarding the educational practice of the mass line. On September 12, at the invitation of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee (中联部), conducted theoretical exchanges with a delegation from the South African Communist Party at the Wanshou Hotel and introduced the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
☆ Zhang Zuying From July 1 to 15, traveled to Wuyi Mountain, Xiamen, Taiwan, and other locations to participate in a national conditions survey on "Grassroots Cultural Construction and the Comparison of Culture across the Taiwan Strait." On the morning of July 24, following the instructions of Comrade Peng Peiyun [4], visited former leaders of the All-China Women's Federation to solicit opinions on the manuscript of "The Theory and Practice of Women with Chinese Characteristics." On July 25, received Comrade Guo Cuilian, Vice Chairperson of the Nanping Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Fujian Province, and other comrades. On September 25, participated in a symposium for the publication of the new book "The Theory of Women with Chinese Characteristics" organized by the All-China Women's Federation.
☆ Fan Jianxin On July 9, participated in a publication symposium at Tsinghua University for "Asking the Way: A Study of Social Trends of Thought and Youth Ideological and Political Education since Reform and Opening-up." On the morning of July 19, delivered a report to the Party Committee of the departments directly under the China Persons with Disabilities Federation on current hot-button issues in ideology and theory. On the morning of August 7, presided over the symposium for the delegation from the Propaganda Department of the CPC Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Committee visiting CASS to inspect the Marxism Theory Research and Construction Project. On September 17, led a team to visit Professor Lin Tai at Tsinghua University to produce the first episode of the "Marxism Grand Lecture Hall" (马克思主义大讲堂) program: "Professor Lin Tai Discusses the Four Stages of Social Trends of Thought since Reform and Opening-up." On the morning of September 25, participated in a planning and discussion meeting for the third series of the "Prepared for Danger in Times of Peace" (居安思危) [5] booklets organized by the CASS World Socialism Research Center. On the afternoon of September 26, received Jørgen Randers, a senior member of the Club of Rome and co-author of The Limits to Growth.
☆ Cheng Enfu On the morning of July 5, delivered a keynote speech at the "International Symposium on Globalization and East Asian Cultural Economy," jointly organized by the School of Marxism at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Gyeongsang National University of South Korea; in the afternoon, delivered a report to the Party Committee Central Study Group (党委中心组) [6] and mid-level cadres of Shanghai Jiao Tong University on the theme "The Chinese Dream and the Chinese Institutional Model," and was appointed as an academic consultant for the Marxism Research Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. On the morning of July 22, met with Professor Zhang Zhongren of Shimane University, Japan. On the afternoon of July 24, met with Mr. Keith Bennett, Vice Chairman of the British 48 Group Club. On the morning of July 25, met with Professor He Shisheng, Head of the Economics Department at the University of Denver, USA. On the morning of August 1, met with a delegation led by Harpal Brar, Chairman of the Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist–Leninist). On August 22, attended the Seminar on World Socialist Trends convened by the International Department of the CPC Central Committee. On August 30, interviewed by a reporter from the People's Daily regarding population issues. On September 4, delivered an academic report titled "On Marxism and Contemporary China" to the cadre training class at the Party School of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee. On September 6, met with a delegation of Argentine Marxist scholars, including Professor Mario Toer of the University of Buenos Aires. On September 9, attended the inauguration ceremony of the "Center for the Study of Das Kapital and Contemporary Issues" at Tsinghua University and delivered a keynote speech. On September 12, met with a delegation led by Japanese Marxist sociologist Professor Masao Watanabe. On September 25, at the invitation of Hu Chunhua, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, delivered a report to the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee Central Study Group and more than 300 departmental and bureau-level (厅局级) [7] leading cadres on the theme: "Interpreting the Spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's Series of Speeches." On the morning of September 26, delivered a report to the Guangzhou Municipal Party Committee Central Study Group and 300 departmental and bureau-level leading cadres on the theme: "Interpreting the Spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's Series of Speeches." On September 28, presided over the international symposium "Scientific and Technological Development and Human Progress in the 21st Century," jointly sponsored by the CASS Research Center for Economic and Social Development, the Institute of Marxism Studies at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and the Transformation Science Research Center of the Autonomous Metropolitan University of Mexico City, and delivered a keynote speech on "The Chinese Dream and the Chinese Path."
☆ Li Chongfu On the afternoon of July 1, participated in and presided over a personnel arrangement meeting for the leadership transition of the Human Development Research Branch of the Chinese Society of Historical Materialism, and discussed issues regarding the 2014 annual academic conference. From July 12 to 14, presided over the theoretical seminar titled "National Historical Materialism and the Path to National Rejuvenation," jointly organized by the Chinese Society of Historical Materialism and Guizhou University. On July 15, delivered an invited academic lecture at Guizhou Normal University titled "Reflections and Debates on 'Universal Values' (普世价值)" [8]. On September 2, participated in a small-scale symposium of the Marxist theoretical community titled "Cultural Tea House" (文化茶座) (the content of which focused on continuing the promotion of the Marxism Theory Research and Construction Project), convened by the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee and presided over by Comrade Liu Qibao [9], and delivered a speech at the meeting.
