Vice Presidents Zhao Shengxuan and Wu Yin Visit the Academy of Marxism for Research and Investigation
On the afternoon of May 23, 2013, Zhao Shengxuan, Deputy Secretary of the Leading Party Members’ Group and Vice President (ministerial level) of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and Wu Yin, Member of the Leading Party Members’ Group and Vice President of CASS, accompanied by Shi He’an, Director of the General Office, visited the Institute of Marxism Studies (IMS) to conduct research and investigation [1]. The purpose was to understand how the IMS has been implementing the spirit of the CASS Work Conference and the progress of the Philosophy and Social Sciences Innovation Engineering [2].
Deng Chundong, Party Committee Secretary of the IMS; Fan Jianxin, Vice President of the IMS; and department heads Hu Leming, Liu Shuchun, and Xu Wenhua attended the research meeting. Secretary Deng Chundong reported on the IMS’s implementation of the CASS Work Conference spirit, particularly regarding the Innovation Engineering.
After listening to the report, Vice President Zhao Shengxuan emphasized several points:
First, regarding the research and dissemination of Marxist theory. (1) In terms of Marxist research, there are many highly capable institutions and departments across the country; the IMS must strive to secure its place nationally and aim to become a leading "dragon head" [3] unit. (2) Research must be integrated with practice. (3) The dissemination of Marxism—specifically learning how to suit the masses and how to influence the masses—is a major issue, and the tasks in this area are very heavy.
Second, regarding the Innovation Engineering. The Innovation Engineering is a significant opportunity; in essence, it is an innovation of mechanisms. While the Academy has established systems, the research institutes should also formulate their own based on actual conditions to ensure better implementation. The ultimate goal is to mobilize initiative and produce "masterpieces and fine works" [4] rather than a simple increase in volume.
Third, strengthening the construction of the leadership team. The development of a unit depends first on its leadership; as the saying goes, "whether a train runs fast depends on the locomotive leading it" [5].
Fourth, leveraging the advantages of ideological and political work. To perform work well, a good system is a necessary condition but not a sufficient one; we must also add our advantage in ideological and political work.
Vice President Wu Yin pointed out that, in accordance with Vice President Zhao Shengxuan's requirements, the leadership team of the IMS should strive to be a benchmark for the entire Academy, and the IMS itself should strive to be a benchmark for the entire country.
