On August 30, 2017, an academic seminar themed "Socialism in Developing Countries: History, Current Status, and Prospects" was held at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. This conference was jointly organized by the Institute of Marxism Studies at CASS and the Research Office of the International Department of the Central Committee of the CPC, and hosted by the International Communist Movement Department of the Institute of Marxism Studies at CASS. It was co-initiated by the "Research on Socialism in Asian, African, and Latin American Countries and Regions" Innovation Project [1] led by Researcher Pan Jin’e of CASS and a research project led by Researcher Chai Shangjin of the IDCPC Research Office.

Deng Chundong, Director and Secretary of the Institute of Marxism Studies at CASS, delivered an address. In his speech, he fully affirmed the significant importance of the seminar’s theme. He expressed hope that through exchanges among scholars, the latest achievements and characteristics of the contemporary global socialist movement and construction would be fully demonstrated to society. He further emphasized providing beneficial suggestions for establishing friendly cooperative relations between China and other developing countries, and strengthening the confidence in the system, path, and theory of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics [2].

Researcher Chai Shangjin, Bureau-level Counselor of the IDCPC Research Office; Researcher Xu Shicheng, Honorary Member of the Academic Division of the Institute of Latin American Studies at CASS; Professor Hu Zhenliang of the Scientific Socialism Department [3] at the Central Party School of the CPC; Professor Cao Changsheng of the School of International Studies at Peking University; Professor Pu Guoliang of Renmin University of China; and leaders from relevant bureaus of the IDCPC attended the meeting and presented reports. Approximately 50 experts and scholars specializing in world socialism from institutions within and outside Beijing—including the IDCPC, the Central Compilation and Translation Bureau [4], CASS, Renmin University of China, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Wuhan University, Zhejiang Normal University, Shandong Normal University, and Yunnan Agricultural University—participated in the seminar.

More than 20 participating experts delivered presentations centered on themes such as "Issues Related to Socialism in Developing Countries and its Disciplinary Research," "Socialism in Vietnam, Cuba, North Korea, and Laos: Theory and Practice," "New Progress in Socialist Movements in Other Asian Countries and Regions," and the "History and Characteristics of Socialist Movements in Africa and Latin America." The experts fully recognized the theoretical value and practical significance of researching socialist movements in developing countries.

In summarizing the seminar, Researcher Chai Shangjin stated: "To my knowledge, this is the first time a specialized seminar has been conducted specifically on socialism in developing countries. The issues discussed were comprehensive, focused, and highly meaningful. Although the conference touched upon many issues in the development of socialism in these nations, it remained focused on the significant questions regarding the reality, future, and destiny of socialism. The presentations by experts and scholars showcased the latest developments in socialist movements within developing countries, broadened horizons for deepening future research on these issues, and offered many beneficial reflections on the exchange and cooperation between Socialism with Chinese Characteristics and world socialism, providing important reference value."
