Editorial Board Meeting of "Studies on Marxism" 2021 Held in Beijing on March 26
On March 26, the 2021 Editorial Board Meeting of Marxism Studies (Makesizhuyi Yanjiu) was held in Beijing. Jiang Hui—Member of the Party Leadership Group of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Director of the Institute of Contemporary China, Director of the Institute of Marxism Studies, Chairman of the Editorial Board, and Editor-in-Chief of Marxism Studies—attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Xin Xiangyang—Secretary of the Party Committee and Deputy Director of the Institute of Marxism Studies of CASS, Vice Chairman of the Editorial Board, and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Marxism Studies—presided over the meeting and gave the closing remarks.
Jiang Hui affirmed the work of Marxism Studies. He stated that with the strong support and assistance of successive editorial boards and the diligent efforts of generations of editorial staff, Marxism Studies has consistently adhered to Marxism as its guide. It has earnestly implemented the spirit of the Party Central Committee and the decisions and deployments of the CASS Party Leadership Group. The journal has played an important role in building a strong bastion for Marxism and advancing the construction of the "Three Great Systems" [1] of Marxist theory. Its authority and status within the theoretical community have been recognized by domestic peers.
Jiang Hui pointed out that 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the inaugural year of the new journey to comprehensively build a modern socialist country, signifying that the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation has entered a critical period. Jiang emphasized that the contemporary world is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century [2]. Faced with the bright prospects of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, strengthening Marxist research is a foundational and strategic project for the Party's ideological and theoretical development. Marxism Studies must consistently maintain the unity of political, theoretical, academic, and innovative qualities; achieve high-quality development in publishing; and continue to fully exert its academic influence and theoretical leadership. It must strengthen the linkage between publishing and scholarly research, deeply advancing the construction of the "Three Great Systems" of Marxist theory. It must adhere to "opening the doors" [3] to run the journal, fully absorbing and drawing on the experience of excellent periodicals to unite and coalesce the forces of Marxist research. Furthermore, it must improve the quality of editing and proofreading, strictly implement relevant regulations, and establish corresponding incentive mechanisms.
Participating board members engaged in discussions regarding the journal’s positioning, column settings, topic planning, publishing characteristics, strengths and weaknesses, and future development, offering valuable opinions and suggestions. There was a unanimous consensus to fulfill their duties as board members, contributing ideas and strategies to ensure Marxism Studies continues to improve.
The following individuals delivered remarks: Ji Zhengju, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Economic Daily; Hou Huiqin, Distinguished Chair Professor at the University of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and President of the Chinese Society of Historical Materialism; Tian Xinming, former Director of the Social Science Development Research Center of the Ministry of Education; Zhang Shuhua, Director of the Institute of Political Science of CASS; Fan Jianxin, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Institute of Political Science of CASS; Luo Wendong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Institute of World History of CASS; Li Zhenghua, Deputy Director of the Institute of Contemporary China and President of Contemporary China Publishing House; Dong Zhenhua, Deputy Director of the Philosophy Teaching and Research Department of the Central Party School (National Academy of Governance); Xin Ming, Vice President of the School of Marxism at the Central Party School (National Academy of Governance); Ai Silin, Dean of the School of Marxism at Tsinghua University; Feng Ziyi, Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Peking University; Hao Lixin, Professor in the School of Philosophy at Renmin University of China; Wang Yi, Secretary of the Party Committee and Executive Vice Dean of the School of Marxism at Renmin University of China; Wang Shuyin, Professor in the School of Marxism at Beijing Normal University; and Han Zhenfeng, former Dean of the School of Marxism at Beijing Jiaotong University.
During the meeting, Li Jianguo, Director of the Editorial Office of Marxism Studies, reported on the journal’s development, and Liu Pu, Chief of the Periodical Division of the CASS Research Management Bureau, introduced the management of periodicals within CASS.
In his summary, Xin Xiangyang thanked the board members for their insightful speeches and earnest suggestions. He expressed hope that the editorial office would earnestly implement the requirements of the Editor-in-Chief and the board members. He urged them to plan topics from the heightened perspective of the strategic global situation of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the world’s profound changes unseen in a century. The journal should fully reflect its political vision, achieve the unity of political and academic logic, focus on the interpretation of classic works, strengthen the scholarly research of major practical issues, enhance the sense of responsibility, improve the editorial review system, and increase efforts in soliciting and organizing high-quality contributions. Ultimately, it should exert the journal's role in academic exchange and leadership, making Marxism Studies a high-quality, original, influential, well-disciplined, and authoritative theoretical publication worthy of its name.
Other experts in attendance included: Jin Minqing, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Institute of Modern History of CASS; Gong Yun, Deputy Director of the Institute of Marxism Studies of CASS; and Lin Jianhua, Deputy Director of the Institute of Marxism Studies of CASS.
It is reported that Marxism Studies has won numerous honors, including "National Social Science Fund Funded Journal" and "Top 100 National Social Science Journals." In recent years, it has ranked among the top in the "Marxist Theory Subject Journals" index of the Information Center for Social Sciences of Renmin University of China. In 2020, it was awarded the title of "Excellent Journal Funded by the National Social Science Fund." In the "Sampling Inspection of Academic Journal Editing and Proofreading Quality" announced by the Bureau of Publishing of the Central Propaganda Department, the error rate of Marxism Studies was lower than 1 in 10,000, and its quality was rated as excellent. When the Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences Comprehensive Evaluation Research Institute of Nanjing University released the "CSSCI Source Journal WeChat Public Account Communication Index" for the first time, the "Marxism Studies" (马克思主义研究) official account ranked first in the humanities category. In August 2020, the Propaganda and Public Opinion Center of the Central Propaganda Department approved the entry of Marxism Studies into the "Xuexi Qiangguo" [4] platform; the "Marxism Studies" account on the platform officially launched on October 28, 2020.
