The Academy of Marxism Holds a Symposium with the Delegation of Theoretical Cadres from World Communist Parties

News & Updates

On the morning of June 4, 2024, Xin Xiangyang, Dean of the Institute of Marxism Studies (IMS) [1], organized and received a visiting delegation of theoretical cadres from world Communist Parties, invited to China by the International Liaison Department of the CPC Central Committee (ILD) [2], and arranged a symposium for exchange. The delegation was led by Nader Chowdhury, Joint General Secretary of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (National Socialist Party) of Bangladesh, and consisted of 20 Communist Party leaders and young-to-middle-aged theorists from 18 countries, including Denmark, Moldova, the United Kingdom, and Chile. The delegation and relevant experts and scholars from the IMS engaged in productive exchanges regarding Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the global significance of Chinese-path modernization, and other issues concerning the international socialist movement.

The symposium was chaired by Lin Jianhua, Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission and Vice Dean of the IMS. Lin Jianhua welcomed Chairman Nader Chowdhury and the delegation, providing a brief overview of the IMS. In his address, Chairman Chowdhury stated that the "changes unseen in a century" [3] require greater political wisdom and necessitate that all humanity join hands to face and share the future. Consequently, he sincerely appealed to the delegation members to cherish this rare opportunity to gather in China, to engage in deep exchanges regarding theoretical innovation and practical experience, and to take what they have seen and heard in China back to their home countries to share with comrades committed to realizing the communist ideal.

Dean Xin Xiangyang delivered a keynote report titled "The Blueprint of Chinese-path Modernization and a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity," which resonated with the delegation members and was interrupted by applause several times. Xin stated that Chinese-path modernization is an essential component of world modernization; it promotes the construction of a community with a shared future for humanity by answering a series of difficult modernization problems facing mankind. The 2050 goals of Chinese-path modernization possess a threefold world-historical significance: the path to building a great socialist power, the path to promoting the vigorous development of world Marxism, and the path to redrawing the map of world modernization. Chinese-path modernization has resolved challenges such as the "Huntington Paradox"—the claim that modernity means stability while modernization means instability [4]—and has significantly enhanced China’s national cultural soft power by creating a new human market civilization and a new human industrial civilization. Finally, Xin quoted a passage from General Secretary Xi Jinping’s keynote speech at the CPC in Dialogue with World Political Parties High-level Meeting on March 15, 2023, to summarize the blueprint and world significance of Chinese-path modernization: Chinese-path modernization is rooted in our own national conditions while drawing on the experience of other countries; it inherits historical culture while integrating modern civilization; it benefits the Chinese people while promoting the common development of the world. It is our broad avenue [5] toward building a strong country and national rejuvenation, and the requisite path for China to seek human progress and Great Harmony [6].

Research Fellow Dai Lixing, Deputy Director of the Research Department of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, delivered a keynote report titled "The World Significance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era." He argued that in answering the major question of the era—"what kind of socialism with Chinese characteristics should be maintained and developed in the New Era, and how to maintain and develop it"—Xi Jinping Thought has deepened the understanding of the laws of socialist construction and held high the banner of socialism in the world. In answering the question of "what kind of great modern socialist power to build and how to build it," it has deepened the understanding of the laws of socialist modernization and provided a new path for the world to explore modernization. In answering the question of "what kind of long-term governing Marxist party to build and how to build it," it has opened a new realm for the building of Marxist governing parties, providing Chinese experience, Chinese wisdom, and Chinese solutions for the development of global party politics.

During the exchange and discussion session, Comrade Luis Gárate from the Communist Party of Peru (Red Fatherland) raised questions concerning three areas: changes in Chinese social strata and the principal social contradiction [7], ideological work and Marxist education, and how to view the development of Artificial Intelligence from a Marxist perspective. Dean Xin Xiangyang, Vice Dean Lin Jianhua, and Research Fellow Zhang Jianyun from the Department of Marxist Principles provided frank, concise, and theoretically profound responses to these questions based on concrete realities.

Vice Dean Lin Jianhua quoted the Tang Dynasty poet Wang Bo’s lines, "A bosom friend afar brings a distant land near," [8] affirming the friendship harvested by all parties through this exchange and expressing the desire to maintain close communication and contact between the IMS and Communist revolutionaries and theorists from all countries.

Yu Haiqing, Vice Dean of the IMS, along with researchers He Xinyuan, Sun Yingshuai, He Qin, Liu Ailing, Wang Xuedong, Li Kaixuan, and Lou Yu (who provided Spanish translation), participated in the exchange. Relevant responsible comrades from the Research Office of ILD and the Bureau of International Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences also attended the symposium.
