The 13th International Forum on the Communist Movement Held in Changchun

On November 1–2, 2025, the 13th International Communist Movement Forum was held in Changchun. The forum was hosted by the Institute of Marxism Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and Northeast Normal University, and organized by the Department of International Communist Movement Studies of the Institute of Marxism Studies at CASS and the Faculty of Marxism at Northeast Normal University. Attendees included leaders, experts, and young scholars from central and state organs, universities, and research institutes, such as the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, CASS, Northeast Normal University, Peking University, Fudan University, Shandong University, and Nanjing University. Scholars at the meeting focused on the theme of "The History, Theory, and Reality of World Socialism," engaging in in-depth discussion and exchange on topics including the historical process and development prospects of world socialism; the historical experiences and lessons of the international communist movement; international organizations, historical figures, and historical events in the history of the international communist movement; new changes in contemporary capitalism and their relationship with socialism; the current status and development trends of socialism abroad; and the contribution and position of socialism with Chinese characteristics within the world socialist movement.

Chang Qing, Deputy Party Secretary and Vice President of Northeast Normal University, delivered an address. The forum was divided into four sessions: the opening ceremony, keynote speeches, sub-forums, and a special seminar on disciplinary development.

The opening ceremony on the morning of the 1st was presided over by Professor Meng Xiansheng, Dean of the Faculty of Marxism at Northeast Normal University. In his speech, Chang Qing introduced the Red heritage [1] of Northeast Normal University as the "cradle of people's teachers," as well as its profound foundation and outstanding advantages in the disciplinary construction of Marxist theory, scientific socialism, and the international communist movement. He pointed out that, standing at the historical nexus of the "Two Centenary Goals" [2], scientific researchers shoulder an important academic mission. This forum aims to deepen the study of the international communist movement, gain a profound grasp of the innovative developments and original contributions of Xi Jinping units New Era Chinese Socialism to scientific socialist theory, and serve the development of the times with academic wisdom.

Researcher Luo Wendong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Institute of Marxism Studies at CASS, introduced in his speech the profound academic accumulation, series of research results, and think-tank construction achievements of the Institute in the disciplines of scientific socialism and the international communist movement. He noted that the development of socialism from utopia to science [3] has written a magnificent epic for the international communist movement, exerting a major and far-reaching influence on the historical process of modern times. Facing the changes unseen in a century [4], the forum must deeply explore new situations and problems emerging in the development of socialism to contribute wisdom and strength toward constructing China's autonomous disciplinary, academic, and discourse systems for the international communist movement, and to promote Chinese-path modernization.

The keynote speech phase was presided over by Researcher Yuan Xiuli, Director of the Department of International Communist Movement Studies at the Institute of Marxism Studies, CASS, and Professor Hu Haibo of the Faculty of Marxism at Northeast Normal University.

On the afternoon of November 1st, following the sub-forums, a plenary report and exchange session was held. Experts and scholars conducted further exchanges on topics such as "The Process and Contributions of World Socialism and Socialism with Chinese Characteristics," "Historical Experience and Lessons of the International Communist Movement," "Current Status and Development Trends of Socialism Abroad," and "New Changes in Contemporary Capitalism and Their Relationship with Socialism." Researcher Liu Haixia, Deputy Director of the Department of International Communist Movement Studies at the Institute of Marxism Studies, CASS, noted in her concluding remarks that the sub-forums were characterized by a warm atmosphere and in-depth discussion. Through a full confrontation of viewpoints and a collision of ideas, scholars proposed a series of constructive policy recommendations for key issues, demonstrating the academic community’s profound grasp of frontier issues in the field of the international communist movement.

On the morning of November 2nd, the forum held a special seminar on the disciplinary construction of scientific socialism and the international communist movement. The seminar was presided over by Professor Wang Xuejun of Northeast Normal University and Pan Xihua, Director of the Office of International Communist Movement History at the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies. Scholars and youth representatives shared their research progress and insights regarding the basic experiences and future prospects of the discipline.

Professor Meng Xiansheng, in his final summary, fully affirmed the profound insights of the participants in theoretical innovation and practical exploration. He pointed out that this meeting achieved a high degree of unity between political and academic nature, balancing interdisciplinary perspectives with an international outlook. It produced research results of both academic value and practical significance, reflecting profound thought, cutting-edge focus, and innovation. This is of far-reaching significance for continuing academic traditions, expanding research space, and promoting disciplinary development.

Researcher Yuan Xiuli, in the general summary of the forum, noted that the submitted papers demonstrated a broad research horizon, covering the 500-year historical trajectory and contemporary development of world socialism. She offered suggestions and expectations for strengthening basic theoretical research, deepening the discussion on the international significance of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and paying attention to new changes in world socialism and capitalism. She called on the academic community to strengthen exchange and collaboration to form a synergy, jointly presenting a new outlook for research on scientific socialism and the international communist movement.
