Brief Introduction to the China Society of Political Economy
The China Association of Political Economy (CAPE) is a national first-level scholarly organization [1] supervised by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and formally registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People’s Republic of China. It is dedicated to theoretical research and academic exchange in the field of political economy.
CAPE is a national, academic, and non-profit social organization voluntarily formed by domestic scholars. It is a national social science academic association designated for key contact by the National Office for Philosophy and Social Sciences [2]. The members and directors of the Association are teaching and research personnel from universities and research institutes engaged in the theory, practice, and policy research and teaching of Marxist political economy.
The predecessor of CAPE was the China Society for the Systematic Study of Socialist Economic Laws (abbreviated as the China Society of Economic Laws), which was formally established in November 1983. On December 9, 2018, approved by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People’s Republic of China (Document No. [2018] 182), the China Society for the Systematic Study of Socialist Economic Laws was officially renamed the China Association of Political Economy.
The mission of CAPE is to persist in taking Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory, the Theory of Three Represents, the Scientific Outlook on Development, and Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as its guidance. Its objectives are to conduct in-depth research on major theoretical issues of Marxist political economy and significant practical problems in the economic development of contemporary China and the world; to fully leverage the cohesive force and influence of an academic association among domestic scholars of political economy; to deeply research Xi Jinping’s economic thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a New Era; to provide intellectual support for socialist modernization; and to serve the theoretical innovation of political economy of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
The administrative home of CAPE is the Institute of Marxism Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The current President is Research Fellow Hou Weimin, Director of the Center for Marxist Research on Economic and Social Development at CASS. Professor Cheng Enfu—a Member of the CASS Academic Division [3], Chief Professor of the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and a renowned Marxist economist—serves as the Honorary President. A large group of distinguished domestic Marxist economists serve as advisors to the Association, including CASS Specially Invited Consultant and Research Fellow Liu Guoguang, CASS Honorary Member of the Academic Division and Research Fellow Yu Zuyao, Professor Hong Yuanpeng of Fudan University, Professor Wu Xuangong of Xiamen University, and Professor Li Jianping of Fujian Normal University. The Secretariat of CAPE is permanently located at the Institute of Marxism Studies at CASS. Research Fellow Wang Zhongbao—Executive Editor-in-Chief and Director of the Editorial Department of the World Review of Political Economy and a fellow at the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies—serves as the Secretary-General.
The official journal of CAPE is Studies in Political Economy (International Serial Number ISSN: 2096-9090; Domestic Serial Number CN: 31-2176/F0), with Professor Cheng Enfu serving as the Editor-in-Chief.
Currently, CAPE hosts one large-scale national academic symposium annually. Since its inception, the Association has successfully held thirty-three annual academic conferences and numerous specialized seminars. The Association also compiles and publishes the Research Report on China's Political Economy (published by Economic Science Press) every year. CAPE has made significant theoretical contributions to the innovative development of Marxist political economy—particularly the political economy of socialism with Chinese characteristics—and to China’s socialist economic construction.
