Call for Papers: The 13th National Forum for Young Scholars of Marxism

The year 2020 marks the decisive year for our country to achieve the "First Centenary Goal" [1] and to complete the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects. It is also an important year for the in-depth study, promotion, and research of the "Decision" of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee. In order to promote in-depth research, mutual learning, and exchange among young Marxist scholars nationwide, the 13th National Forum for Young Marxist Scholars—jointly sponsored by the Institute of Marxism Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and Xi’an Jiaotong University, and co-organized by the editorial department of Marxist Studies (Makesizhuyi Yanjiu) and the School of Marxism at Xi’an Jiaotong University—will be held in May 2020 (tentative) in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. We are now soliciting papers from young scholars nationwide engaged in the research and teaching of Marxist theory.

I. Forum Theme and Topics

(A) Forum Theme Marxism and the Construction of the System of Institutions of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics

(B) Forum Topics

  1. A Marxist analysis of the "Two Miracles" [2];
  2. Research on upholding and improving the basic socialist economic system;
  3. Research on the fundamental system of upholding the guiding position of Marxism in the ideological sphere;
  4. Research on the relationship between upholding and improving the system of socialism with Chinese characteristics and promoting the modernization of the national governance system and governance capacity;
  5. Research on Xi Jinping’s important expositions on completing the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects;
  6. Research on the great significance of China’s historic resolution of absolute poverty;
  7. Research on the relationship between expanding opening-up and independent development based primarily on self-reliance;
  8. Research on the important role played by State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) in the construction of the "Belt and Road" Initiative;
  9. Research on the correlation between socialism with Chinese characteristics and the world socialist movement;
  10. Other topics related to the theme.

II. Time and Location

Time: May 2020 (tentative). For the specific date, please follow the "Marxist Studies" WeChat public account, "Marxist Studies (Journal)," and the National Institute of Marxism Studies website (myy.cass.cn). Location: School of Marxism, Xi’an Jiaotong University (Xi’an, Shaanxi).

III. Form of Participation

Participation is based on paper submission. Following expert review of submissions, invitations will be sent to selected participants.

IV. Submission Requirements

  1. Deadline for submissions: March 31, 2020.
  2. Papers should ideally be between 10,000 and 15,000 characters in length. They should feature a distinct theme, correct viewpoints, and clear argumentation, reflecting academic rigor and innovation, and must be previously unpublished.
  3. The main text of the paper should be preceded by an abstract (approx. 300 characters), keywords (3–5), and a brief author biography (name, gender, age, affiliation, professional title, position, contact address, phone number, and email). The format of the text should follow the submission style guide of Marxist Studies.

VI. Special Forum Activities

  1. Paper Awards: 1st Prize (1 winner), 2nd Prize (2 winners), 3rd Prize (3 winners), and Excellence Awards (4 winners); prize money and certificates will be awarded.
  2. A "Face-to-Face" session between the editorial department of Marxist Studies and young scholars.
  3. Invitations to outstanding young scholars who have previously published in Marxist Studies to deliver reports.
