2020 Doctoral Admissions Retest Scheme and Candidate List of the Department of Marxist Studies, University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences
In accordance with the requirements of the "Notice of the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Successfully Conducting the 2020 Doctoral Candidate Re-examination and Admission Work," and in light of the specific circumstances of the Department of Marxism Studies, the relevant arrangements for the 2020 doctoral candidate recruitment re-examination [1] and admission work are hereby announced as follows:
I. Organization and Management of the Re-examination
- Establishing and refining organizational management structures: A Re-examination and Admission Leadership Group, consisting of no fewer than three members, shall be established. This group will be headed by the person in charge of the Department/Faculty and will include participation from relevant departments such as discipline inspection and supervision.
- Under the guidance of the Departmental Re-examination and Admission Leadership Group, a re-examination team consisting of no fewer than five experts—holding the title of associate professor (or equivalent professional technical position) or above in the relevant discipline—shall be established to evaluate the academic caliber of the candidates participating in the re-examination. The Re-examination Working Group is responsible for the re-examination results.
II. Verification of Re-examination Eligibility Candidates entering the Department of Marxism Studies re-examination must submit relevant eligibility verification materials as required. Degrees obtained overseas must be accompanied by a certification certificate issued by the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE) of the Ministry of Education. Should the Department have any doubts regarding a candidate's academic credentials (student status), the candidate must provide authentication certification issued by an authoritative institution as required. Those who do not meet the relevant regulations of the Ministry of Education or the University will not be permitted to undergo the re-examination.
The Department of Marxism Studies shall strengthen honesty and integrity requirements for candidates entering the re-examination. For candidates who engage in fraud, examination irregularities, or cheating, regardless of when such actions are verified, they will be handled strictly in accordance with the "Measures for Handling Violations in National Education Examinations" and the "Regulations on the Management of Students in Regular Institutions of Higher Education."
III. Initial Examination Score Requirements for Candidates Entering the 2020 Department of Marxism Studies Doctoral Re-examination
- The score for each individual subject in the Initial Examination (Professional Subject I and Professional Subject II) must be no lower than 60 points.
- Within each recruitment specialization of this Department, candidates shall be ranked from high to low based on the total score of their Initial Examination professional subjects. The top five candidates in each recruitment specialization will enter the re-examination. (Candidates whose total Initial Examination professional subject scores result in a tie for the fifth place in their respective specialization may enter the re-examination simultaneously. For specializations where the number of candidates meeting the above score requirements is fewer than five, the actual number of candidates who reached the "passing line" [2] for that specialization shall prevail.)
IV. Time and Arrangement of Re-examination
- Re-examination Time: July 26—Candidates entering the re-examination will participate in the unified national online foreign language written exam organized by the University Admissions Office. From July 29 to July 31—Candidates will participate in the foreign language comprehensive ability interview and the professional comprehensive ability interview organized by the Department.
- Re-examination Format: Remote online re-examination.
- Interview Platform: In principle, the CHSI (China Higher Education Student Information and Career Center) remote re-examination platform will be utilized.
- Specific requirements and precautions for the re-examination will be communicated to the candidates by the staff of the Department of Marxism Studies via telephone, email, or other methods.
V. Re-examination Assessment Methods The Department of Marxism Studies has an ample pool of candidates who reached the required scores. This doctoral recruitment re-examination will implement a "differential re-examination" [3]. The ratio of candidates participating in the re-examination will be executed according to relevant university requirements. The re-examination assessment mainly includes evaluations of the candidate's foreign language proficiency, academic caliber, ideological and political qualities, moral character, and a physical examination.
- Evaluation of foreign language proficiency: The 2020 doctoral recruitment foreign language proficiency exam consists of two parts: a foreign language written exam and a foreign language comprehensive ability interview. The written exam is organized uniformly by the University and conducted as an online open-book exam. The interview is organized independently by the Department and conducted as a remote online interview.
- Evaluation of professional academic caliber: Based primarily on the requirements for professional cultivation, the re-examination team will evaluate the candidate’s ability to comprehensively apply learned knowledge, their mastery of "frontier knowledge" [4] and the latest research trends in the discipline, and—with reference to the candidate's application materials—will assess their comprehensive quality and potential for doctoral cultivation.
- Ideological and political qualities and moral character assessment: The assessment content mainly includes the candidate's political attitude, ideological performance, study (work) attitude, moral qualities, and legal compliance. During the re-examination period, candidates must submit ideological and political quality and moral character appraisal materials issued by the Party organization (Party Committee, Sub-Party Committee, or Party General Branch), personnel department, or political work department of their current employer or the unit where their files are archived. This assessment is not quantitatively factored into the total score, but those whose assessment results are "unsatisfactory" will not be admitted.
- Physical Examination: Candidates intended for admission must undergo a physical examination at a local "Grade II, Class A" [5] hospital or above as required and mail the physical examination form to the Department. Those who fail to undergo a physical examination, those whose results are unsatisfactory, or those found to have engaged in fraud during the physical examination will not be admitted or will have their admission eligibility revoked. New students must participate in the unified university entrance physical examination upon registration; those who fail will be handled according to relevant regulations.
VI. Evaluation and Calculation of Re-examination Scores
- The total re-examination score is 300 points. A score of 180 or above is passing; those who fail the re-examination will not be admitted.
- The total re-examination score includes: 50 points for the foreign language written exam, 50 points for the foreign language comprehensive ability test (including oral and listening), and 200 points for the professional comprehensive ability interview.
- The total entrance examination score is the sum of the initial examination score (200 points total) and the re-examination score (300 points total).
VII. Timing and Methods of Information Disclosure
- Disclosure Time: The re-examination work plan and candidate list will be announced before the re-examination. Re-examination results will be announced after the Departmental re-examination concludes. The list of candidates intended for admission will be announced by August 5, 2020 (the disclosure period shall be no less than 10 working days).
