2021 Editorial Board Meeting of "Studies on Marxism" Held in Beijing
On March 26, 2021, the Editorial Board Meeting of Marxist Studies (Makesizhuyi Yanjiu) was held in Beijing. Jiang Hui—Member of the Party Group of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Director of the Institute of Contemporary China, Director of the Institute of Marxism Studies, Chairman of the Editorial Board, and Editor-in-Chief of Marxist Studies—attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Xin Xiangyang—Secretary of the Party Committee and Deputy Director of the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies, Vice Chairman of the Editorial Board, and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Marxist Studies—presided over the meeting and delivered the concluding remarks.
Jiang Hui offered his affirmation of the work carried out by Marxist Studies. He stated that with the strong support and assistance of successive editorial boards and the diligent efforts of generations of comrades in the editorial department, Marxist Studies has consistently adhered to Marxism as its guide. It has earnestly implemented the spirit of the Party Central Committee and the decisions and deployments of the CASS Party Group. The journal has played an important role in building a fortress for Marxism and advancing the construction of the "Three Great Systems" [1] of Marxist theory. Its authority and status within the theoretical community have been recognized by domestic peers.
Jiang Hui pointed out that 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the first year of embarking on a new journey to comprehensively build a modern socialist country, a period in which the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation has entered a critical stage. Jiang Hui emphasized that the world today is undergoing great changes unseen in a century [2]. Faced with the bright prospects for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, strengthening Marxist research is a foundational and strategic project for the Party's ideological and theoretical development. Marxist Studies must consistently maintain the unity of political, theoretical, academic, and innovative qualities. It must achieve high-quality development in publishing, continue to play its role in academic influence and theoretical guidance, and strengthen the link between publishing and academic research to promote the profound construction of the "Three Great Systems" of Marxist theory. It should persist in "opening its doors" to publishing, fully absorbing the experiences of other outstanding academic journals, and uniting and cohering the forces of Marxist research. Furthermore, it should improve the quality of editing and proofreading, strictly implement relevant regulations, and establish corresponding incentive mechanisms.
The editorial board members in attendance engaged in discussions regarding the journal’s positioning, column settings, topic planning, publishing characteristics, strengths and weaknesses, and future development, offering valuable opinions and suggestions. There was a consensus that they would perform their duties as board members effectively and provide counsel to ensure that Marxist Studies is run better and better.
The following individuals spoke at the meeting: Ji Zhengju, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Economic Daily (Jingji Ribao); Hou Huiqin, Distinguished Chair Professor at the University of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and President of the Chinese Society of Historical Materialism; Tian Xinming, former Director of the Higher Education Social Science Development Research Center of the Ministry of Education; Zhang Shuhua, Director of the CASS Institute of Political Science; Fan Jianxin, Secretary of the Party Committee of the CASS Institute of Political Science; Luo Wendong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the CASS Institute of World History; Li Zhenghua, Deputy Director of the Institute of Contemporary China and President of Contemporary China Publishing House; Dong Zhenhua, Deputy Director of the Department of Philosophy at the Central Party School (National Academy of Governance); Xin Ming, Deputy Dean of the School of Marxism at the Central Party School (National Academy of Governance); Ai Silin, Dean of the School of Marxism at Tsinghua University; Feng Ziyi, Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Peking University; Hao Lixin, Professor in the School of Philosophy at Renmin University of China; Wang Yi, Secretary of the Party Committee and Executive Deputy Dean of the School of Marxism at Renmin University of China; Wang Shuyin, Professor in the School of Marxism at Beijing Normal University; and Han Zhenfeng, former Dean of the School of Marxism at Beijing Jiaotong University.
During the meeting, Li Jianguo, Director of the Editorial Department of Marxist Studies, reported on the development of the journal. Liu Pu, Director of the Journal Division of the CASS Bureau of Scientific Research Management, introduced the journal management situation at CASS.
In his summary, Xin Xiangyang thanked the board members for their excellent speeches and candid suggestions. He expressed hope that the editorial department would earnestly implement the requirements of the Editor-in-Chief and the board members. He stressed the need to plan topics from the height of the strategic global situation of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the world’s great changes unseen in a century. The journal should fully reflect its political vision and achieve the unity of political and academic character. It should pay attention to the interpretation of classic works, strengthen scholarly research on major practical issues, enhance the sense of responsibility in its work, improve the editorial review system, increase efforts in soliciting and organizing manuscripts, and leverage its role in academic exchange and leadership. The goal is to make Marxist Studies a high-quality, original, influential, and authoritative theoretical journal with a healthy professional atmosphere, worthy of its name.
The editorial board members attending the meeting included the aforementioned experts, as well as Jin Minqing, Secretary of the Party Committee of the CASS Institute of Modern History; Gong Yun, Deputy Director of the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies; and Lin Jianhua, Deputy Director of the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies.
It is reported that Marxist Studies has successively received numerous honors, including "National Social Science Fund Funded Journal" and "National Top 100 Social Science Journals." In recent years, it has ranked among the top "Journals of Marxist Theoretical Disciplines" in the reprint index of the Information Center for Social Sciences of Renmin University of China. In 2020, Marxist Studies was awarded the title of "Excellent Journal Funded by the National Social Science Fund." In the results of the "Academic Journal Editing and Proofreading Quality Spot Check" released by the Bureau of Publication of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the error rate of Marxist Studies was lower than 1/10,000, and its quality was rated as excellent. When the China Humanities and Social Sciences Comprehensive Evaluation Research Institute of Nanjing University released the first "CSSCI [3] Source Journal WeChat Public Account Communication Index," the "Marxist Studies" WeChat account ranked first in the humanities category. In August 2020, the Public Opinion Center of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee approved the entry of Marxist Studies into the "Xuexi Qiangguo" [4] platform; the "Marxist Studies" Xuexi Qiangguo account was officially launched on October 28, 2020.
