Notice on the 2021 Award Program for Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements of the Academy of Marxism

To all departments of the Institute of Marxism Studies:

Based on the "Notice on Organizing the 2021 Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) Institute-Level Outstanding Research Achievement Awards" issued by the Bureau of Research Management (hereafter referred to as the "Award Notice"), and in accordance with the "Measures for Awarding Outstanding Research Achievements of the Institutes of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences" (hereafter referred to as the "Institute Award Measures"), we are now initiating the selection process for the Institute of Marxism Studies (IMS) Outstanding Research Achievement Awards. The relevant matters are hereby notified as follows:

I. The scope of selection for the 2021 IMS Outstanding Research Achievement Awards primarily covers achievements published between January 2016 and December 2018 by IMS personnel during their tenure at the Institute. Individual significant achievements published before 2016 may also be considered if they have not previously applied for Academy-level [1] or Institute-level awards, and have been proven outstanding through practical testing and academic evaluation. Any achievements involving issues regarding political orientation, academic conduct [2], or intellectual property disputes are ineligible for participation.

  1. For other requirements regarding participating achievements, please refer to the relevant provisions of the "Institute Award Measures."
  2. Personnel who had already completed retirement procedures at the time their declared achievements were published shall participate in the selection activities for outstanding research achievements for retired personnel organized by the Bureau of Retired Cadres.
  3. Personnel who had not yet entered CASS at the time their declared achievements were published are ineligible to participate.
  4. Individual achievements or achievements primarily completed by personnel who have been transferred out of the Academy, or who remain abroad (or outside the mainland) beyond their approved term, are ineligible to participate.
  5. Achievements completed through cross-institute cooperation may only participate in selection at one unit, generally the unit of the first author.

II. The basic procedure for the IMS Outstanding Research Achievement Awards is: recommendation by researchers, determination of candidate achievements by the IMS Academic Committee, evaluation by external experts, public notification of candidate achievements to solicit objections, and deliberation by the IMS Award Committee.

According to the "Institute Award Measures," the specific arrangements for the researcher recommendation phase are as follows:

  1. Researchers shall provide their own achievements. Any research achievement meeting the award criteria may be submitted to the Research Office on a voluntary basis. In principle, there is no limit on the number of submissions, but authors should select and provide their best work according to the quality of the achievements. Submitted materials include achievement information (title, format, author, word count, publication date and venue, etc.) and a PDF of the achievement (no hard copies required).
  2. The Research Office will compile and conduct a preliminary review of the achievements provided by researchers and announce the achievements that meet the award criteria.
  3. Research departments shall organize the selection and recommendation of participating achievements. Each research department will organize its personnel to select achievements from those announced by the Research Office that meet the award criteria and recommend them to the IMS. The recommendation quota for each research department is: the number of research offices within the department × 3 + 2. Note: Among the achievements recommended by each research department, the proportion of achievements by personnel from that specific department shall not exceed two-thirds.
  4. The Research Office will compile the achievements recommended by each research department and report them to the IMS Academic Committee to determine the candidate achievements for the awards.

III. To ensure alignment with CASS-level awarding, the selection for the IMS Outstanding Research Achievement Awards will utilize the "Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Outstanding Research Achievement Award Recommendation Form" and the "Expert Evaluation Form for Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Outstanding Research Achievement Award Applications."

IV. Other relevant requirements shall be implemented in accordance with the "Institute Award Measures" and will not be detailed further.

V. Starting from the date this notice is issued, IMS researchers may provide their research achievements that meet the award criteria to the Research Office. The deadline is October 22.
