2022 Seminar on the International Communist Movement and Expert Guidance Meeting for the Yellow Book of International Communist Movement (2022-2023) Successfully Held
On December 31, 2022, the 2022 Seminar on the Situation of the International Communist Movement and the Expert Guidance Meeting for the Yellow Book of the International Communist Movement (2022–2023) was successfully held in an online format. Nearly 50 participants attended the meeting, including experts and scholars from more than ten universities and research institutes—such as the Party School of the Central Committee of the CPC (National Academy of Governance), the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Central China Normal University, Yunnan University, and Shandong University—as well as members of the Yellow Book Editorial Committee and its authors.
The proceedings were divided into two parts. In the first part, experts and scholars in the discipline of the international communist movement were invited to deliver keynote reports centered on the situation of the movement in 2022. In the second part, the authors of the Yellow Book of the International Communist Movement (2022–2023) presented the initial drafts of their special reports, followed by one-on-one commentary and guidance from the experts.
Researcher Xin Xiangyang, Secretary of the Party Committee of the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies and Editor-in-Chief and Director of the Yellow Book Editorial Committee, first delivered the opening remarks. Professor Lin Jianhua, Vice President of the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies and Deputy Director of the Yellow Book Editorial Committee, presided over the opening remarks and the expert keynote report segment.
In his remarks, Researcher Xin Xiangyang pointed out that the convening of the 20th CPC National Congress was the most significant event of 2022 for both China and the world, and it serves as our fundamental guidance for observing the situation of the international communist movement this year. Chinese-path modernization has answered the "questions of China, the world, and the times" [1]. In 2022, many new circumstances and characteristics emerged in the international communist movement and world socialism. As experts and scholars in the discipline of the international communist movement, we must strengthen our confidence in history [2] and seize historical initiative—including confidence in the history of the international communist movement. In our research, we should enhance our "problem consciousness" [3] and pay close attention to major practical issues. We must persist in using Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as our theoretical guidance. Combining our disciplinary characteristics and analytical perspectives, we should analyze major "hotspot" issues concerning the international landscape that occurred this year, review significant events at relevant historical junctures of the international communist movement, summarize the new achievements in the reform and development of socialist countries in 2022, and organize the important activities of Communist Parties, Workers' Parties, and the Left in capitalist countries. In particular, we must analyze and discuss the new developments of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the New Era and their impact on world socialism, aiming to produce results that are unique, pioneering, and leading. He expressed his hope that, under the guidance of the experts, the Yellow Book of the International Communist Movement to be published next year would achieve even greater progress.
The following experts delivered themed speeches: Professor Hu Zhenliang from the Party School of the Central Committee of the CPC (National Academy of Governance) on "Worldview and Methodology for Judging the Situation of the International Communist Movement"; Researcher Chai Shangjin from the International Department of the CPC Central Committee on "The Global Significance of Chinese-path Modernization from the Perspective of Sinicization and Adapting to the Times"; Researcher Xuan Chuanshu, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Graduate School of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, on "Winning the Initiative Amidst Great Changes" [4]; Professor Cui Guitian, Director of the Institute of Contemporary Socialism at Shandong University, on "The World Socialist Significance of the 20th National Congress"; Professor Yuan Qun, Vice Dean of the School of Marxism at Yunnan University, on "The Direction of the Nepalese Communist Movement after the General Election"; and Professor Yu Weihai, Director of the Research Center for Overseas Political Parties at Central China Normal University, on "Unification, Debates, and Struggles of Overseas Communist Parties during the 2022 Russia-Ukraine Conflict." Professor Lin Jianhua, Vice President of the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies, submitted a report titled "The Theory and Practice of Chinese-path Modernization as a Great Pioneering Undertaking in the History of Socialist Development."
During the expert commentary and guidance segment, Researcher Pan Jin’e, Director of the Department of International Communist Movement at the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies and Editor-in-Chief of the Yellow Book, and Researcher Tan Xiaojun from the same department, successively moderated the presentations. The authors of various special reports for the Yellow Book briefly introduced their writing logic, main content, and the issues they hoped the experts would help resolve. Seven guiding experts provided comments on each report and offered suggestions for improvement. Associate Researcher Zhu Debin from Social Sciences Academic Press, who is responsible for the publication of the Yellow Book, also provided a brief commentary and emphasized the writing standards for "Blue Books" and "Yellow Books." Finally, Editor-in-Chief Pan Jin’e provided a brief summary of the meeting, expressed heartfelt thanks for the meticulous guidance of the experts, and requested that all authors further refine their reports according to the experts' comments and revision suggestions to ensure the successful publication of the 2023 Yellow Book.
This seminar was hosted by the CASS Institute of Marxism Studies and organized by the Department of International Communist Movement and the Editorial Committee of the Yellow Book of the International Communist Movement.
