2023 Recruitment Announcement for the First Batch of Professional and Technical Personnel of the Academy of Marxism, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

I. Institutional Profile The Institute of Marxism Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (hereafter referred to as the Academy) is a national-level Marxist research institution newly established on the foundation of the former Institute of Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought, following approval by the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

The Academy currently comprises five research departments: the Department of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the Department of Marxist Principles, the Department of the Sinicization of Marxism, the Department of the International Communist Movement, and the Department of Overseas Marxism. Under these departments are 18 research offices, including Basic Theory, Basic Strategies, Party Building and Party History, Ideology and Social Trends, Marxist Philosophy, Marxist Political Economy, Scientific Socialism, the History of Marxist Development, Mao Zedong Thought, the Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, Ideological and Political Education, Marxist Atheism, History of the International Communist Movement, Contemporary World Capitalism, Contemporary World Socialism, Overseas Left-wing Thought, Theories of Overseas Communist Parties, and Western Marxism.

II. Basic Requirements for Recruitment

  1. Possess the nationality of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and abide by the Constitution and laws of the PRC.
  2. Support the leadership of the Communist Party of China, adhere to the correct political direction, academic orientation, and value orientation [1], possess a sound scholar’s style [2], moral character, and professional ethics, and exercise integrity and self-discipline.
  3. Possess good professional ethics, demonstrate a passion for the position, maintain a spirit of solidarity and cooperation, exhibit personal integrity, and have no record of violating laws, regulations, or discipline.
  4. Possess a doctoral degree. Domestic fresh graduates must graduate on schedule and successfully obtain academic credentials and degrees certified by the national education administration; returned overseas students must provide materials certifying their identity and experience as overseas students. Proficiency in one foreign language is required (Level 6 or above for English) to reach a level suitable for academic exchange.
  5. Possess the physical and psychological conditions necessary to perform duties healthily, adapt to the requirements of the post, and guarantee full-time work at the Academy during the term of employment.
  6. Age generally should not exceed 35 years (born after January 1, 1988); for particularly outstanding candidates, this may be relaxed to a maximum of 40 years (born after January 1, 1983).
  7. Other conditions stipulated by the State and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

III. Scope of Recruitment Fresh domestic doctoral graduates (of non-Beijing origin), fresh domestic doctoral graduates (of Beijing origin), social personnel with Beijing household registration (hukou), and postdoctoral fellows finishing their terms.

IV. Positions, Quantity, and Specializations Scientific Research Positions Quantity: 5 Specializations: Marxist Theory (0305), Political Science (0302), Foreign Languages and Literature (0502), Marxist Philosophy (010101). The aforementioned specialization codes refer to the Ministry of Education's "Directory of Disciplines and Specializations for the Granting of Doctoral and Master's Degrees and Postgraduate Training (2008 Updated Version)" and the "Directory of Disciplines and Specializations for Graduate Education (2022)." For applicants whose field of study is similar to but not listed in the aforementioned reference directories, they may contact the recruiting unit to confirm eligibility.

V. Job Responsibilities

  1. Commit to Marxist academic research.
  2. Undertake various scientific research tasks assigned by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Institute of Marxism Studies.
  3. Publish at least one academic paper in core journals annually and undergo term-of-employment assessments according to the contract.
  4. Actively participate in professional study and training, and go deep into the grassroots to understand actual conditions [3], etc.

VI. Recruitment Procedures

  1. Online Registration: Registration period is from the date of publication until February 17, 2023.
  2. Qualification Review: Qualifications will be reviewed according to the announcement requirements. Candidates for examination will be determined and notified; those who do not pass the review will not be notified separately. In principle, the ratio of people passing the review to the number of positions should reach 3:1 to open the examination. If this ratio is not met, the number of recruits may be reduced or the recruitment canceled based on the circumstances.
  3. Written Examination: Maximum score of 100 points, with a passing threshold of 60 points. Those who reach the passing score will participate in the professional evaluation.
  4. Professional Evaluation: The Academy's Academic Committee and Employment Committee will jointly conduct the professional evaluation, including personal statements, Q&A, expert appraisal, and voting. In principle, candidates must obtain more than two-thirds of the affirmative votes from the experts actually present. Candidates will be ranked from highest to lowest according to votes, and the candidate for the next stage will be determined at a 1:1 ratio to the position; if votes are tied, ranking will be based on written examination scores.
  5. Internship: Candidates will undergo an internship of no less than two weeks to confirm whether they meet the post requirements.
  6. Physical Examination: For those who pass the internship, a physical examination will be arranged at a designated hospital. The standards refer to the "General Standards for Medical Examination for Civil Servant Recruitment," and a psychological test will also be conducted.
  7. Political Investigation: For those who pass the physical examination, a review of recruitment qualifications and a political investigation [4] will be conducted. Should a vacancy occur due to a candidate withdrawing or failing the internship, physical examination, or political investigation, a replacement may be arranged in sequence from the candidates who received more than two-thirds of the affirmative votes in the professional evaluation, or the vacancy may remain unfilled and the recruitment number reduced accordingly. Affected by the pandemic, the order of the internship, physical examination, and political investigation may be adjusted according to actual circumstances.
  8. Determination of Candidates: Based on the results of the comprehensive examination, professional evaluation, physical examination, internship, and political investigation, the Party Committee of the Academy will collectively study and decide on the proposed candidates.
  9. Public Notice: Information on the proposed candidates will be publicized for no less than seven working days via the channels where the recruitment announcement was published.
  10. Record-filing and Induction: The results will be submitted to the Personnel and Education Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences for the record, reviewing the qualifications of the proposed candidates and the employment procedures. After filing, the Personnel Department of the Academy is responsible for signing employment contracts, clarifying term objectives and tasks, and handling formalities for joining the Academy.

VIII. Registration Method Applicants should log on to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences recruitment website (http://cass.gjzhaopin.cn/), register a personal account, fill in information as required by the system, and upload the following registration materials. Registration Materials:

  1. Photocopies of both sides of ID card, the front page of the household registration booklet (hukou), and the individual’s own page;
  2. Photocopies of the highest academic degree certificates and degree certifications;
  3. Two papers published independently or as the first author;
  4. Doctoral dissertation (postdoctoral fellows finishing their terms must also submit their postdoctoral research report);
  5. Photocopies of award certificates.
