Chinese Modernization and Theoretical Innovation in Political Economy: Call for Papers for the 33rd Annual Conference of the Chinese Society of Political Economy

The summarization of the theory of Chinese-path modernization constitutes a major theoretical innovation of the 20th CPC National Congress [1]. In order to strengthen the research and interpretation of Xi Jinping Thoughts on Socialist Economy with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, to conduct in-depth study of theoretical issues regarding Chinese-path modernization, and to further promote the theoretical innovation of political economy, the 33rd Annual Academic Conference of the Chinese Society of Political Economy (CSPE) is scheduled to be held in Zhengzhou, Henan, from May 13 to 14, 2023. The conference is hosted by the CSPE and Henan University, and organized by the School of Economics and the School of Marxism of Henan University, and the Center for Marxist Economic and Social Development Research of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Co-organizers include the Central China Development Institute and the Research Center for Yellow River Civilization and Sustainable Development of Henan University, as well as the editorial boards of Political Economy Research (政治经济学研究), World Review of Political Economy, and Shanghai School of Economics (海派经济学) [2].

I. The theme of this conference is "Chinese-path Modernization and Theoretical Innovation in Political Economy." Discussions will focus on the following topics:

  1. Marxist thought on the development of modernization.
  2. Xi Jinping’s important expositions on Chinese-path modernization.
  3. The relationship between China’s socialist economic system and Chinese-path modernization.
  4. The relationship between China’s fine traditional culture [3] and Chinese-path modernization.
  5. The historical origins and theoretical innovations of Chinese-path modernization.
  6. The institutional guarantees and policy approaches for Chinese-path modernization.
  7. The leadership of the Party and the fundamental nature of Chinese-path modernization.
  8. Artificial intelligence, the development of the digital economy, and the latecomer advantages of Chinese-path modernization.
  9. Commonalities and essential differences between Chinese-path modernization and Western modernization.
  10. The indigenous characteristics and global significance of Chinese-path modernization.
  11. The impact of Chinese-path modernization on contemporary capitalism.
  12. Theoretical innovation in national governance systems and public economics.

II. Manuscript Requirements: (1) Submissions should feature a prominent theme and rigorous argumentation, reflecting scholarship and innovation. (2) Citations must be standardized and accurate. Use footnotes for annotations, restarting numbering on each page. (3) Papers should be in Word format. Use 10.5pt Songti font [4] for the main text and 12pt Bold for internal subheadings, with 1.5 line spacing. The main text should ideally be between 10,000 and 12,000 Chinese characters. Include an abstract (approx. 350 words), keywords (3–5), a brief author biography, and detailed contact information (mailing address, mobile number, and email). III. This conference will establish sub-forums for postdoctoral researchers and graduate students. Postdoctoral researchers and current graduate students committed to the study of Marxist political economy are encouraged to submit papers.

IV. The organizing committee will issue formal invitation letters to selected authors by May 6.

V. Selected papers will be screened for inclusion in the conference proceedings to be published by Economic Science Press. Outstanding papers may be recommended to journals such as Political Economy Research, Contemporary Economic Research, Shanghai School of Economics, and the World Review of Political Economy.
