Party Branch of the Department of International Communist Movement Studies of the Academy of Marxism Conducts Theme Education Research Activities at Honghe University in Yunnan

On the morning of July 10, members of the Party Branch of the Department of International Communist Movement Studies of the Institute of Marxism Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) conducted a research visit to Honghe University in Yunnan Province. The research centered on two themes: first, the specialized experiences of Honghe University in conducting the "Theme Education" [1] activities for the deep study and implementation of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era; and second, the current status of the university’s research on Vietnam and Laos.

Hong Bo, Secretary of the Party Committee of Honghe University, received the research team. The symposium was presided over by Ma Hongbo, Dean of the School of Marxism. Other participants included relevant department heads such as Zhu Xin, Member of the University Party Committee and Director of the Organization Department; Yang Shenxuan, Member of the University Party Committee and Director of the Publicity Department [2]; Ye Shaofei, Vice Dean of the Institute of Area Studies; Shi Jianguang, Director of the Library; Professor Shao Jianping of the School of Marxism; and Liu Lian, Deputy Director of the Office.

Honghe University is a full-time public undergraduate institution jointly established and managed by Yunnan Province and Honghe Prefecture, with the province taking primary responsibility. The university uses the new concept of a "Gateway University" [3] to create a new high ground for the opening-up of higher education in border regions. Since its founding, Honghe University has achieved prolific results in conducting research on neighboring countries and collaborating on pedagogical research.

At the symposium, Pan Jine, Secretary of the Party Branch, introduced the primary objectives of the research team’s visit and provided a brief overview of the Institute of Marxism Studies at CASS. Zhu Xin introduced the university’s progress in carrying out Theme Education activities. These activities have been fully deployed, focusing on theoretical study, investigation and research, cautionary rectification [4], and the promotion of development. Regarding investigation and research, the focus is placed on twelve specific areas, while simultaneously pushing forward rectification and remediation to prioritize the resolution of problems in nine major aspects. In accordance with the relevant requirements of Yunnan Province, the university continues to further promote deep study, supervise implementation, and conduct effective publicity and reporting to deepen the Theme Education activities.

Yang Shenxuan introduced the distinctive highlights of the university’s work in the Theme Education activities for the deep study and implementation of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. For example, the university has adopted methods such as reading groups, specialized tutoring, and the combination of "red" immersive education [5] with negative cautionary education to conduct historical learning activities. Within the Theme Education activities, emphasis is also placed on the theoretical publicity and interpretation, as well as international exchange and communication. The Theme Education activities have been carried out in a comprehensive and solid manner with significant results.

Ye Shaofei introduced the status of Vietnam studies at the university. Honghe University leverages its geographical advantage of being adjacent to Vietnam to serve the construction of Yunnan Province as a "Radiation Center" [6] for South and Southeast Asia, cultivating comprehensive talents in regional and country studies. Research on Vietnam began as early as 2004; the university now hosts the "Vietnam Research Center" under the Ministry of Education and the "Sri Lanka Research Center" under the National Ethnic Affairs Commission. It has also been approved for the Yunnan Provincial innovative discipline of "Regional and Country Studies." The "Red River Basin Social Development Forum" and the "Red River Basin University Presidents' Forum" organized by the school possess considerable reputation and influence.

Professor Shao Jianping introduced the current state of research on Vietnam and Laos within the School of Marxism, and Shi Jianguang introduced the status and advantages of research regarding the China-Vietnam border.

Researcher Pan Jine expressed gratitude to Honghe University for its support of this research activity, noting that the symposium yielded rich gains. She highlighted the learning of Honghe University’s specialized work and experiential activities regarding the Theme Education for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. Pan Jine noted that Honghe University possesses unique characteristics and advantages in utilizing its locational strengths to conduct research and cooperation regarding Vietnam and Laos, expressing hope that both parties can further engage in deep exchange and cooperation in the future.
