Holistic Approach to National Security
National security is an important cornerstone for stabilizing the state and securing the country; the maintenance of national security lies at the heart of the fundamental interests of all ethnic groups throughout the nation. Improving national security strategy and policy, resolutely safeguarding national political security, and coordinating the advancement of various security efforts constitute an extremely important task for the Party and the state. Consequently, the Holistic Approach to National Security [1] was proposed in response to shifts in the international situation and the profound evolution of international relations. It encompasses the strategic thinking, planning, general security policies, and institutions designed to guarantee and defend the overall security of the nation. In 2014, General Secretary Xi Jinping introduced the "Holistic Approach to National Security," emphasizing the Party’s centralized and unified leadership over national security work. He stressed the organic unity of prioritizing people's security, political security, and national interests; the unification of traditional and non-traditional security; the unification of internal and external security; and the promotion of building a community with a shared future for humanity.
About the Author
Shang Wei, PhD in Law, was born in May 1963. He is a Research Fellow in the Department of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era at the Institute of Marxism Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). He primarily engages in research on Xi Jinping’s thinking on diplomacy, Marxist theories of international relations, Sino-Russian relations, and international strategy. He has presided over key research projects of the CASS and undertaken major research tasks commissioned by the Academy. He is the author of five monographs, including The Holistic Approach to National Security; Peace, Development, Cooperation, and Win-Win: Creating an International Environment through an Independent Foreign Policy of Peace; Major-Country Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics: Building a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity; The Evolution and Reconstruction of World Order; and Research on the Evolution of the Soviet Union and Ethnic Issues. He has published over 40 academic papers in journals such as Qiushi, Marxist Studies, Chinese Social Sciences Today, Journal of Southwest China Normal University, Journal of Hunan Normal University, People’s Tribune, Issues of Contemporary World Socialism, and Northeast Asia Forum.
