↩ [1] 任继愈 (Rèn Jìyù, 1916–2009): A preeminent Chinese scholar of philosophy, religion, and history. He is noted for applying historical materialism to the study of Chinese Buddhism and Daoism. He famously proposed that Confucianism functioned as a religion in traditional Chinese society, a theory that sparked significant debate in Chinese Marxist religious studies.

↩ [2] 中发1982年19号文件 (Zhōngfā 1982 nián 19 hào wènjiàn): Referencing "The Basic Policy on Religious Affairs during the Socialist Period in Our Country." This is a foundational document of the Reform and Opening-up era that transitioned China away from the radical suppression of religion during the Cultural Revolution toward a policy of "freedom of religious belief" under Party guidance, emphasizing that religion would eventually wither away only through the long-term development of productive forces.

↩ [3] 王充 (Wáng Chōng, 27–c. 97 AD): A Han Dynasty philosopher known for his work Lunheng (Balanced Discourses). He is celebrated in Chinese Marxist historiography as a "materialist" and "atheist" progenitor for his rationalist critique of omens, portents, and the theory of teleological interaction between heaven and mankind (谶纬 chènwěi, "prophetic diagrams/texts").

↩ [4] 于光远 (Yú Guāngyuǎn, 1915–2013): A prominent Marxist economist and philosopher who served in high-ranking positions within the CPC's propaganda and scientific departments. He was a leading figure in the "Reform and Opening-up" theory and a staunch defender of scientific rationalism against "pseudoscience" and "superstition" in the 1980s and 90s.
