↩ [1] 哲学社会科学 (zhéxué shèhuì kēxué): Philosophy and social sciences. In the Chinese academy, this is a formal category of scholarship managed by the state, distinct from the natural sciences, and fundamentally grounded in the guidance of historical materialism.

↩ [2] 学究天人，道贯古今 (xué jiū tiān rén, dào guàn gǔ jīn): A classical idiom praising profound erudition. The first half originates from Sima Qian’s goal to "investigate the boundaries of heaven and man" (究天人之际); the second half suggests his mastery of the "Dao" (universal principles or truth) spans all of history. Ren Jiyu (1916–2009) was a renowned scholar of Chinese philosophy, Buddhism, and Taoism who famously applied Marxist analysis to these subjects.

While often translated as "church-state relations" in a Western context, in Chinese discourse it refers more broadly to the relationship between political authority and religious belief/institutions, often emphasizing the historical principle of "politics as the master, religion as the subordinate" (政主教从).
