↩ [1] 让什么住在中国命运 (Ràng shénme zhù zài Zhōngguó mìngyùn): The title phrasing is a rhetorical play on historical and ideological agency. In the Chinese Marxist context, this often refers to the tension between scientific materialism (man determining his own fate through the development of productive forces) and religious or superstitious fatalism.

↩ [2] 两重性 (liǎng chóng xìng): "Duality" or "Dual Nature." In Chinese Marxist religious studies, this refers to the theory that religion has both a negative side (as the "opium of the people," an instrument of class oppression, or a source of superstition) and a positive/neutral side (its capacity to adapt to socialist society, carry cultural heritage, or encourage social harmony under the leadership of the Party).

↩ [3] 脱愚工程 (tuō yú gōngchéng): Literally "Project to Shed Ignorance." This is a conceptual parallel to the "Project to Shed Poverty" (脱贫工程).
