↩ [1] 发挥宗教积极作用 (fāhuī zōngjiào jījí zuòyòng): A standard formulation in CPC religious policy since the early 2000s. It acknowledges that while the Party is atheistic, religion can contribute to social harmony and economic development provided it adapts to socialist society.

↩ [2] 《加强宗教问题的研究》(Jiāqiáng zōngjiào wèntí de yánjiū): A 1963 directive by Mao Zedong. It was written in response to a report by the philosopher Ren Jiyu and marked a shift toward treating religion as a serious academic and strategic subject for Marxist analysis, rather than a mere feudal leftover.

↩ [3] 社会主义核心价值体系 (shèhuì zhǔyì héxīn jiàzhí tǐxì): The "Socialist Core Value System," first proposed in 2006. It consists of the guiding role of Marxism, the common ideal of socialism with Chinese characteristics, the national spirit centered on patriotism, the spirit of the times centered on reform and innovation, and the socialist concept of honor and disgrace.
