↩ [1] 社会主义核心价值观 (shè huì zhǔ yì hé xīn jià zhí guān): First formally articulated at the 18th National Congress of the CPC (2012), these consist of twelve values divided into three levels: national (prosperity, democracy, civility, harmony), social (freedom, equality, justice, rule of law), and individual (patriotism, dedication, integrity, friendship).

↩ [2] 《加强宗教问题的研究》 (Jiā qiáng zōng jiào wèn tí de yán jiū): A 1963 written instruction by Mao Zedong. Mao argued that it was impossible to criticize theology without researching the history and doctrines of religions, leading to the establishment of the Institute of World Religions (IWR) under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

↩ [3] 理论自信 (lǐ lùn zì xìn): One of the "Four Matters of Confidence" (四个自信) promoted by the CPC, which include confidence in the path, theory, system, and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

↩ [4] 邪教 (xié jiào): Often translated as "evil cults" or "heterodox teachings." In the Chinese context, this refers to organizations that deify their leaders, use secretive methods to control members, and are deemed to disturb social order. The term has a historical pedigree dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties used to describe millenarian movements that threatened imperial authority.
