↩ [1] 任继愈 (Rèn Jìyù): A renowned Chinese scholar (1916–2009) who specialized in the history of Chinese philosophy and religion. He was a pioneer in applying historical materialism to the study of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, arguing that the latter functioned as a religion in traditional Chinese society.

↩ [2] 社会主义核心价值观 (shèhuì zhǔyì héxīn jiàzhíguān): Formulated at the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, these involve twelve values categorized at the national (prosperity, democracy, civility, harmony), social (freedom, equality, justice, rule of law), and individual (patriotism, dedication, integrity, friendship) levels. In Chinese Marxist discourse, "scientific atheism" is viewed as the ontological foundation for these values.
