In the context of Chinese Marxist religious studies, "viewing religion dialectically" typically refers to acknowledging both its "opium-like" negative functions (social control, alienation) and its historical, ethnic, or stabilizing positive functions during the primary stage of socialism, rather than adopting a simplistic, eliminativist stance.

↩ [2] 自立运动 (zìlì yùndòng): Independent Movement (or Self-Reliance Movement). This refers to late 19th and early 20th-century movements within Chinese Christianity to break away from foreign missionary control and establish indigenous, self-governing, self-supporting, and self-propagating churches. This historical precedent is a cornerstone for the modern "Three-Self Patriotic Movement" sanctioned by the CPC.
