↩ [1] 任继愈 (Rèn Jìyù): A renowned Chinese scholar (1916–2009) who specialized in the history of Chinese philosophy and religion. He was a leading proponent of using Marxist historical materialism to study Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism, famously arguing that Confucianism functioned as a religion in imperial China.

↩ [2] 于光远 (Yú Guāngyuǎn): A prominent Marxist economist and philosopher (1915–2013). In the post-Mao era, he was a key figure in the "Profound Discussion on the Criterion of Truth" and a staunch opponent of "pseudoscience" (特异功能, tèyì gōngnéng or "supernatural powers") that gained popularity in China during the 1980s.

It is a specific security concern in Chinese religious policy related to maintaining the "Sinicization" of religion.
