↩ [1] 苏东剧变 (Sū Dōng jùbiàn): A standard Chinese political term referring to the "drastic changes" (the collapse of socialist regimes) in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe between 1989 and 1991. Chinese scholarship intensely analyzes this period to prevent similar outcomes through "self-revolution."

↩ [2] 学科建设 (xuékē jiànshè): A common term in Chinese academia referring to the systematic institutionalization of a field of study, including its curriculum, faculty, research funding, and degree-granting status within the state-sanctioned academic hierarchy.
