↩ [1] 任继愈 (Rèn Jìyù): A renowned Chinese philosopher and historian of religion (1916–2009). He is credited with pioneering the Marxist study of religion in China and argued that Confucianism should be understood as a religion (the "Confucian Religion" theory), which had profound implications for how the CPC categorized traditional Chinese culture.
