↩ [1] 上帝 (shàng dì): Historically, this term referred to a high deity in the theology of the Shang and Zhou dynasties. In the 19th century, Protestant missionaries adopted it as the translation for the Christian "God," leading to enduring academic debates in China regarding whether the Chinese "Shangdi" and the Christian "God" refer to the same ontological entity.

↩ [2] 新文化运动 (xīn wén huà yùn dòng): The New Culture Movement (c. 1915–1923) was an intellectual ferment that attacked traditional Confucianism and promoted "Mr. Science" and "Mr. Democracy." It provided the intellectual cradle for the introduction of Marxism to China and the founding of the CPC.

↩ [3] 邪教 (xié jiào): Often translated as "cults" or "evil cults," the term literally means "heterodox teachings." In the Chinese legal and political context, it refers to organizations that use religion or qigong as a cover to deceive members, disrupt social order, and harm lives, such as the banned Falun Gong.

↩ [4] 正名 (zhèng míng): A Confucian concept (Rectification of Names) which argues that social harmony depends on the proper use of language and titles. In modern Chinese political discourse, it is often used to describe the process of clarifying definitions or correcting the public perception/legal status of a group or concept.

↩ [5] 王林现象 (wáng lín xiàn xiàng): Refers to Wang Lin (1952–2017), a self-proclaimed qigong master who gained massive influence among Chinese political, business, and entertainment elites. His downfall and subsequent legal issues became a symbol of the persistence of "superstition" and "pseudoscience" within certain sectors of the establishment.
