↩ [1] 《论工人政党对宗教的态度》 (Lùn gōngrén zhèngdǎng duì zōngjiào de tàidù): A foundational 1909 article by V.I. Lenin ("The Attitude of the Workers' Party to Religion") which argues that religion is the "opium of the people" but insists that the struggle against religion must be subordinated to the class struggle for socialism.

↩ [2] 李大钊 (Lǐ Dàzhāo): One of the main co-founders of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1921. He played a pivotal role in introducing Marxism to China and was a leading intellectual of the May Fourth Movement.

↩ [3] 有机马克思主义 (yǒujī Mǎkèsī zhǔyì): Organic Marxism is a recent school of thought, largely associated with Philip Clayton and Justin Heinzekehr, that attempts to synthesize Marxian critiques of capitalism with process philosophy (Alfred North Whitehead) and ecological concerns. It has gained significant attention (and critique) in Chinese academic circles.

↩ [4] 延安时期 (Yán’ān shíqī): The period from 1935 to 1948 when the CPC headquarters was located in Yan’an, Shaanxi province. It is considered a formative era for the Party’s governance models, including its minority and religious policies.

↩ [5] 民间宗教 (mínjiān zōngjiào): "Folk religion" or popular religion. In the Chinese administrative context, this refers to various non-institutionalized beliefs and practices that fall outside the five officially recognized religions (Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Catholicism, and Protestantism).

↩ [6] “双创” (shuāng chuàng): A shorthand for "Creative Transformation and Innovative Development" (创造性转化、创新性发展) of traditional Chinese culture. This policy, emphasized in the New Era, seeks to adapt traditional culture to modern socialist society while maintaining cultural continuity.

↩ [7] 述学立论 (shù xué lì lùn): To expound scholarship and establish theoretical arguments. This phrase is associated with the 2016 "Symposium on Philosophy and Social Sciences" where Xi Jinping called for Chinese scholars to build a discourse system with "Chinese characteristics."
