It linked atheism with anti-imperialist nationalism, arguing that Christianity was a tool of Western cultural imperialism and a barrier to national rejuvenation.

This is a key theoretical development under Xi Jinping, referring to the "combination of the basic tenets of Marxism with fine traditional Chinese culture." The "First Combination" was with China's specific reality. The "Second Combination" emphasizes that Marxism and traditional Chinese culture can mutually reinforce and "activate" one another.
