Consolidating Spiritual Strength and Promoting Academic Integrity
China Social Sciences Net (Reporter: Gao Ying) — On July 18, the Symposium on Deeply Studying and Implementing the Spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s Important Instructions on the Cultivation of Spiritual Civilization [1] and the Second Forum on Academic Style and Ethical Construction were held in Beijing by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). Gao Xiang, President of CASS and Secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Peng Jinhui, Vice President and Deputy Secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group, conveyed the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instructions on the cultivation of spiritual civilization as well as the spirit of the National Commendation Meeting on the Cultivation of Spiritual Civilization. Hang Yuanxiang, Head of the Discipline Inspection and Supervision Group of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision stationed at CASS and member of the Leading Party Members' Group, read the commendation decision. Zhao Zhimin, Secretary-General and member of the Leading Party Members' Group, attended the meeting. Zhao Rui, Vice President and member of the Leading Party Members' Group, presided over the meeting. Li Xuesong, Vice President and member of the Leading Party Members' Group, delivered a keynote speech focusing on the study of Xi Jinping Thought on Culture [2].
Gao Xiang stated that General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important expositions on the cultivation of spiritual civilization scientifically answer major theoretical and practical questions regarding spiritual civilization in the New Era. These expositions constitute an important component of Xi Jinping Thought on Culture and provide the fundamental guidance [3] for successfully carrying out the work of cultivating spiritual civilization. As a vital temple for the creation of spiritual and cultural products, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences must deeply study and implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important expositions. It must fully leverage the foundational role of academic style and ethical construction, leading academic and organizational styles through an excellent Party style, and supporting the Party style with a clear and clean academic and organizational atmosphere. Efforts must be focused on creating a research environment and political ecosystem characterized by integrity, uprightness, and high morale.
Gao Xiang pointed out that prioritizing academic style and ethical construction is a fine tradition of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Since the 20th CPC National Congress, the Leading Party Members' Group has further tightened the "institutional cage" [4] to maintain the purity and cleanliness of this "temple," and the effects of academic style and ethical construction across the Academy have begun to manifest. We must profoundly grasp the situation and tasks facing our Academy’s academic style and ethical construction. We must raise the banner of academic faith, establish academic sentiment, and uphold academic character [5]. With higher standards, stricter requirements, and more practical measures, we will continuously push academic style and ethical construction to new heights.
Gao Xiang emphasized the need to resolutely forge political loyalty and continuously strengthen the construction of the Academy as a political organ. We must deepen the research and interpretation of the Party’s innovative theories [6] through a rigorous academic style, strictly abide by political discipline and political rules, and earnestly maintain political security. We must adhere to scientific standards, strictly follow academic norms, and abide by academic ethics. We must promote study and education in an integrated manner alongside the implementation of rectifications mandated by Central Inspections [7], managing conduct construction on a regular and long-term basis. New achievements in academic style and ethical construction should be used to consolidate the new pattern of political construction within our Academy.
During the meeting, Ma Yuan—Deputy Secretary-General of CASS and Executive Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Executive Vice President of the Chinese Academy of History—delivered a speech regarding the Chinese Academy of History being awarded the title of "National Civilized Unit." Li Guoqiang, Member of the CASS Academic Division [8], Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee, and Vice President of the Chinese Academy of History; Feng Weijiang, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the Institute of Information Studies; Guo Zilin, Deputy Director of the Bureau of Scientific Research Administration; and Fan Jiarui, Associate Research Fellow at the National Institute of International Strategy, shared thematic presentations revolving around "academic style, academic integrity, and academic cultivation."
The meeting featured three sub-forums: Academic Style and Ethical Construction in Academic Associations, Teacher Ethics and Conduct Construction, and Academic Style and Ethical Construction in Periodicals. Participating experts and scholars conducted in-depth discussions on topics such as "Promoting the High-quality Development of Academic Associations with Iron Discipline and Excellent Academic Style," "Deepening the Task of Fostering Virtue through Education [9] with Excellent Conduct," and "The Mission and Responsibility of Periodicals in the Construction of the 'Two Strongholds and One Platform' [10]."
Deputy Secretaries-General of the Academy, the Discipline Inspection and Supervision Group stationed at the Academy, principal leading cadres at the departmental and institute levels from all affiliated units, and representatives of Academy units attended the meeting.
