The Second World Conference on China Studies held in Shanghai; Li Shulei attends and delivers keynote speech
Xinhua News Agency, Shanghai, October 14 — On October 14, the Second World Conference on China Studies opened in Shanghai. Li Shulei, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee [1], attended and delivered a keynote speech. Chen Jining, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal CPC Committee, attended and delivered remarks.
Guests from China and abroad agreed that President Xi Jinping's 2023 congratulatory letter to the World Conference on China Studies · Shanghai Forum—which pointed out that "China Studies is both the study of historical China and the study of contemporary China"—provided essential guidance for promoting academic exchange and the dialogue of civilizations between China and the world. At present, as the world's great changes unseen in a century [2] accelerate their evolution, humanity stands at a new crossroads, and the international community's attention toward China increases by the day. It is necessary to maintain a global perspective, remain grounded in Chinese practice, and continuously improve the knowledge system of China Studies. One must interpret China deeply from an academic standpoint, better contributing to the world through Chinese wisdom and Chinese concepts.
Guests from China and abroad stated that China Studies research must understand Chinese civilization as an organically unified living entity and grasp the full picture of China's economic, political, and social development within a broader historical and cultural space. It is necessary to provide a profound interpretation of the path of Chinese-path modernization and clearly present a true, multi-dimensional, and panoramic view of China to the world. We must practice the Global Civilization Initiative [3], serving as messengers who bridge Chinese and foreign civilizations to play a greater role in promoting mutual learning and exchange between civilizations.
Themed "Historical China and Contemporary China from a World Perspective," this conference was hosted by the State Council Information Office and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, with co-organization by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and relevant universities. During the meeting, the Shanghai Initiative: Mutual Learning Among Civilizations and the Prosperous Development of World China Studies was released. Approximately 500 guests from more than 50 countries and regions attended.
